year 9 Chemistry topics

In Year 9 Chemistry you will learn more about Chemical reactions and how to write word and symbol equations. You will also find learn more about how Chemistry is used in real life.
9gh environmental chemistry and using chemistry

9ef reactions of metals and patterns of reactivity

In this Unit you will learn a bit more about The Periodic Table. You will find out more about metals in particular and learn that some are more reactive than others. You will start to write word and symbol equations for chemical reactions.

Here are the learning objectives for this unit:

I can
  • Name some metals
  • Describe the differences between metal and non-metal elements
  • Name some metals which react with oxygen or water
  • Write word equations for reactions of:

    o   Metals and water

    o   Metals and oxygen

    o   Carbonates and acids

    o   Metals and acids

    o   Acids and alkalis
  • Describe how some metals are more reactive than others
  • Write simple symbol equations
  • Explain why metals are used for certain purposes

I understand
  • Where metals are in the periodic table
  • That when a chemical reaction happens new substances are made
  • What happens to reactivity as you go down Group I

useful 9ef websites

Try Doc Brown's 9E Quiz or 9F Quiz.

Here are some websites that have interactive periodic tables:
http://periodictable.com/

Try this balancing chemical equations game.

Use simulations on the skoool website you can try some simulations to learn about displacement reactions, the reactivity series, or uses of displacement reactions.

Have a look forward to IGCSE and learn here about Atoms, Compounds or Mixtures

watch this prezi about elements mixtures and compounds.
