8J magnets and electromagnets

8I HEATING AND COOLING
8k light
8l sound
In this topic you will learn about what a magnet is and where they are used. You will make and investigate your own electromagnet (a magnet that can be turned on and off!).

Here are the learning objectives for this topic:

I can

o Draw the field lines of a magnet  using a compass
o Predict if an object is magnetic or non-magnetic
o Magnetise a piece of metal
o Make a compass
o Make an electromagnet

I understand
o That magnetism is a force
o That permanent magnets are made of iron, nickel or cobalt
o That like poles will repel and opposite poles will attract
o That all magnets have a magnetic field round them
o Why the earth has a magnetic field
o Why the Earth´s magnetic field is useful to us
o That an electromagnet is a magnet which can be turned on or off
o That we can change the strength of an electromagnet

useful 8J websites

Try the Bitesize pages on Bar magnets, magnetic fields, electromagnets.

This Bitesize page explains how an electric bell works (using electromagnets)

Here is Doc Brown´s 8J Quiz.

The school for champions website explains various uses of electromagnets (good for your homework!)

Learn some more about electromagnets from howstuffworks.com. It is interesting but there is a lot of writing!

The NDT resource centre has produced a good website with lots of information about this topic.

How do the magnetic strips on credit cards work? Answer here.

Or, have a look forward to IGCSE and look at the P11 Magnetism or P14 Electromagnetic Effects pages on StampScience.

this discovery channel video is about the earth´s magnetic field and the why it is important
